International Women’s Day 2026 Message from the President of the University of Tokyo

March 11, 2026

March 8 is International Women’s Day, as designated by the United Nations. With this date as a focal point, efforts are undertaken around the world to celebrate women’s achievements and contributions to society, while also working to eliminate the disparities and inequalities that remain in such areas as education, employment, and political participation, and to eradicate all forms of violence.

At the University of Tokyo, we launched the Safer Campus at UTokyo project this academic year, with the aim of creating an environment free from gender-based harassment and violence. Last December, we also took part in the Purple Light-Up campaign by illuminating the main gate of Hongo Campus in purple and widely conveying, both within and beyond the university, the messages of eliminating sexual violence, achieving gender equality, and respecting diversity. Through such initiatives, we are working to build a campus where all can study, conduct research, and work in safety and with peace of mind.

Although the University has positioned diversity and inclusion at the core of its fundamental policies and is committed to promoting them across the institution, it is also true that incidents have occurred that force us to acknowledge that, in some areas, closed organizational structures and cultures still remain. As President, I am committed to advancing reform throughout the university so that such inexcusable incidents will never be repeated.

The participation and active contributions of women are indispensable to the creative initiatives and sustainable development of the University of Tokyo. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, I hope that each of us will once again recognize the realization of an inclusive society free from discrimination and prejudice as our own responsibility, and translate that recognition into concrete action. The University of Tokyo will continue to make every effort toward this goal.

Teruo FUJII, President
The University of Tokyo
