The University of Tokyo Hospital Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Mahidol University Siriraj Hospital to Advance Collaboration in Biodesign

The University of Tokyo Hospital (Director: Professor Sakae Tanaka, Location: Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University (Dean: Professor Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Location: Bangkok, Thailand). The agreement aims to foster academic exchange and practical collaboration in the field of Biodesign.

At the Translational Research Center (TR Center), Division of Biodesign, The University of Tokyo Hospital (Principal Investigator: Professor Minoru Ono), the team is engaged in medical device development projects in collaboration with clinical sites and industry partners both in Japan and abroad.*
The division promotes needs-driven innovation and provides hands-on educational programs to nurture the next generation of medical innovators, with a particular emphasis on accelerating social implementation through international collaboration.

Mahidol Biodesign, based at Mahidol University, was established through collaboration among the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Medical Technology. The program promotes the development of practical medical prototypes by fostering critical thinking and design skills. Its educational focus spans the fields of medical devices, digital health, and biological therapies, leveraging the Biodesign methodology for practical learning and innovation.

Through this MoU, the two institutions will pursue the following forms of collaboration:
- Visits and informal exchanges of faculty, researchers, and administrative staff exchanges in specific areas of education, research, and community engagement
- Joint meetings, symposia, and scientific gatherings
- Exchange of academic information and materials
- Exploration of opportunities for joint research programs and joint research and development projects
- Other academic exchange and cooperation programs mutually agreed upon by both parties

The signing ceremony was held on July 18, 2025, at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University in Bangkok. Representatives from both Biodesign teams attended the event, including Professor Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.

The Biodesign Division at the University of Tokyo Hospital TR Center is strategically advancing international collaboration to accelerate medical device innovation that addresses pressing healthcare needs. Through this partnership, the two institutions aim to strengthen joint expertise in global public health challenges and support for medical device development.
