Abstract
With global warming, energy and water shortages present grand challenges for humanity and demand innovative solutions. Even in mature fields, fundamental and cross-disciplinary research can spark breakthroughs in energy and water technologies. At the same time, the pursuit of practical applications often raises new fundamental scientific questions. This talk will highlight examples from the speaker’s research to illustrate how basic research can generate transformative ideas, and conversely, how applied research can drive fundamental discoveries.Program
