Abstract
Recent advances in seismic monitoring and laboratory experiments reveal that earthquake preparation begins much earlier and over much larger areas than previously recognized. Across laboratory, induced, and tectonic earthquakes, seismic activity progressively concentrates toward future rupture zones before failure and disperses afterward. Similar space-time patterns have been observed before major earthquakes in California, Japan, Turkey, and Taiwan. These findings suggest that large earthquakes are preceded by extended weakening processes that contain information about eventual earthquake size. Understanding such precursory signals may lead to more advanced earthquake forecasting methods and improved assessment of seismic hazards.Program
