Abstract
One of the intriguing puzzles of Hindu nationalism is the prominent role of forms of embodied spirituality in it. From Swami Vivekananda to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the body politics of the Hindu renouncer is significant. Many of India’s political leaders, of various political persuasions, exhibit aspects of Hindu renunciation without being monks. The puzzle in this is the combination of nationalist activism with a tradition that focuses on renouncing social life in search for spiritual goals.Program
