Abstract
Engineering technologies have played a vital role in advancing medicine, and in recent years this progress has accelerated through the growing use of artificial intelligence. One particularly promising development is the concept of the digital twin: a computer-based model of an individual patient that can be used to virtually measure what are difficult to measure in real world, for example blood flow in the small arteries of the heart, and to test different treatment options virtually before they are actually applied to real patient. This talk will introduce research efforts aimed at using digital twins and AI to support more personalised medicine, tailored to the characteristics of each individual patient. It will also consider their societal impact and challenges involved, for which collaboration across disciplines, such as engineering and medicine, and across national and cultural boundaries play a key role. This webinar is overall aimed at providing an opportunity to discuss how engineering technologies can shape a future of medicine, especially considering our ageing society.Program
