This talk explores the impact of the Asia-Pacific War on Japanese society. Drawing on a large-scale survey conducted in 1951 by the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo in the Keihin Industrial Zone, it examines the career trajectories and residential relocations of workers during the wartime and postwar periods. The presentation focuses on three types of war experience — military conscription, repatriation, and war damage — considering who underwent these experiences and what consequences they entailed. It argues that war experiences differed according to social class and individual attributes, and investigates the mechanisms through which war produces inequality.
