The cumulative number of visitors to Intermediatheque surpassed the 5 million mark

May 13, 2026

In March 2013,  the University of Tokyo opened Intermediatheque as a public facility jointly operated by JAPAN POST Co., Ltd. and The University Museum. On April 18, 2026, thirteen years after its inauguration, the cumulative number of visitors to this unique facility surpassed the 5 million mark.
To celebrate this significant milestone with everyone, we will launch a collaborative creative event. The “Strata Chronica – Sand Layers of Time” invites visitors to help create a symbolic installation using sand samples collected from various locations by researcher of the University of Tokyo. We invite you to entrust your time and presence to the sand as you layer it into large glass jars previously used for university experiments. In this context, sand is not only a symbol of time, but it also serves as a medium connecting our visitors with the museum. Once the jars are filled, they will be placed on permanent display at the Intermediatheque in commemoration of this milestone, preserved for future generations.

Celebration Event “Strata Chronica – Sand Layers of Time”
Dates: May 15, 2026 – May 29, 2026
*This event will end when all the jars have been filled with sand.
