University of Toyama and Institute for Cosmic Ray Research Sign MOU to Advance Astroparticle Physics Research, Including Hyper-Kamiokande
On June 4, 2026, the University of Toyama and the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen collaboration in advancing astroparticle physics research, including Hyper-Kamiokande. Recognizing the scientific and educational significance of the construction, operation, and collaborative research associated with Hyper-Kamiokande, the two institutions agreed to work closely together. A signing ceremony was held to commemorate the agreement.
The ceremony was conducted in a press conference format and began with opening remarks from Shoichi Ogio, Director of the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research. Director Ogio stated:
“This MOU aims to promote close collaboration between our two institutions, based on the importance of the scientific and educational outcomes expected from the construction, operation, and joint research of Hyper-Kamiokande. By working together on this globally significant project, we hope to provide opportunities for young researchers and students to engage with cutting-edge research environments and foster the development of individuals who can play active roles on the international stage.”
Following this, Shigeru Saito, President of University of Toyama, delivered remarks:
“The conclusion of this MOU is highly meaningful, as it enables our university to participate in one of the world’s most advanced large-scale research projects and to serve as a regional research hub. We will provide research and development facilities for the assembly and preparation of photomultiplier tubes and related components for Hyper-Kamiokande, while supporting the activities of researchers and students from Japan and abroad. This collaboration is expected not only to advance research but also to offer valuable educational opportunities for young researchers and graduate students to experience world-class research environments.”
After the remarks, Director Ogio provided an overview of the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment. This was followed by a presentation from Yuki Nakano, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Science at University of Toyama, who introduced the university’s contributions to the project.
Dr. Nakano explained that approximately 3,600 photosensors to be installed in the outer detector of Hyper-Kamiokande will be delivered to the University of Toyama beginning in July 2026. Performance evaluation and assembly work will be carried out together with Hyper-Kamiokande collaborators from Japan and overseas. He also noted that preparations are currently underway in cooperation with collaborators in the United Kingdom.
